A film, a cult costume: “Les Demoiselles de Rochefort
In 1967, Catherine Deneuve and Françoise Dorléac became Delphine and Solange Garnier. The outfits of the two mythical
sisters of Rochefort have marked a whole generation. Analysis.
Glamorous, mischievous, elegant … In Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, the Dorléac sisters embody the French chic.
Released in 1967, Jacques Demy’s film is a testimony of the past as much by its musical universe as by its costumes.
Shot simultaneously in English and French, the film will be known internationally. With their pretty blonde and red
curls, Françoise Dorléac and Catherine Deneuve twirl in a scene that has become cult: the singing and dancing sequence
of the Twin Song. In this scene, the two sisters wear white trapeze dresses with colored inserts recognizable at
a glance. The mythical costumes are signed Jacqueline Moreau and Marie-Claude Fouquet.
Twins of style
Solange and Delphine Garnier are sisters on screen as in real life. After directing the younger sister in Les Parapluies
de Cherbourg, Jacques Demy reunited Catherine Deneuve and Françoise Dorléac for Les Demoiselles de Rochefort. After
Les Portes claquent and La Chasse à l’homme, this will be their third and last collaboration before the death of
the elder in a car accident. But this role of Solange Garnier will immortalize the actress, eternal piano teacher
with mischievous smiles. In the sequence of The Twin Song, Jacqueline Moreau and Marie-Claude Fouquet dress the sisters
in a 100% sixties look: white trapeze dresses with tank sleeves and color block yokes that reflect their personality.
Delphine opts for acid pink and Solange for sunny yellow, the whole, matched with their ballerinas with square ends.
These colors, they will not hesitate to exchange them during the film. But if their looks are so much alike it is
to mark the link between them. Both are artists in search of the male ideal. The looks are completed by two capelines
decorated with flowers and signed Jean Barthet.
A chromatic universe
After working on The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Jacques Demy’s childhood friend, Jacqueline Moreau, found him on the
set of Les Demoiselles de Rochefort. This time, for the costume designer the colors are lighter.
In search of lightness, the filmmaker gave Jacqueline Moreau a very specific order: more pastels and acidic
shades to represent the enchanting world of Solange and Delphine. The costume designer testifies to the
importance of colors for the director: “The two sisters was an idea of Jacques, the yellow and pink and
the hats, because Jacques loves them, they are in all his films. With Bernard Evein, the set designer,
we did some research together. There were house facades repainted to match the dresses… Jacques gave
us strong images and we translated them. Not surprisingly, these mythical outfits have not aged a bit.
The pastel colors and the mini, flagship of the sixties, are part of the essentials that return every spring.
