Conner Ives is the designer behind the most trendy dress of the moment

Rihanna, Simone Ashley, Adwoa Aboah… They are all fans of Conner Ives and his patchwork dress.

Conner Ives is a name to remember and this, for some time now. This American-born, London-based designer has

had some great moments in his career, even before he graduated from Central Saint Martins. Since then, his

fashion ascension has become undeniable. View more Simone Ashley is a huge fan of this young American designer

Dressing Adwoa Aboah for the 2022 Met Gala is where he started to make a name for himself around the world, but

it was Rihanna who really got things going. The star was among the first fans of the designer’s deconstructed

T-shirt dresses, which remain a signature of the brand to this day, and recruited him as one of the first members

of her creative team for Fenty.

With Rihanna’s approval, Conner Ives has continued to produce dresses pieced together from recycled T-shirts

that he carefully assembles. Working with XXL patterns of original T-shirts, he mixes and matches fabric graphics

and patterns to create a completely new garment, but with timeless references.

Imagination is the key

Conner Ives’ signature technique dates back to 2022, when he was staying with his aunt in New Mexico. “She had

this bag of scraps that she used as rags,” he tells British Vogue. “I found it thrilling to see how you could

literally mix graphics from old T-shirts that I’d been obsessed with forever. It was so natural.”

“It’s a testament to our society: I think we’re ready to put anything on a T-shirt. It’s such a literal and direct

form of communication; I love it.” – Conner Ives

Today, he sources the T-shirts himself, scouring vintage clothing wholesale warehouses around the UK for pieces

he can turn into jewelry. Customers can rest assured knowing that every T-shirt in production has been selected

by Conner Ives or a member of his team. For him, the hunt is “the best part of the process, because you rarely

see a T-shirt twice,” he explains. “Some are hilarious, some are bizarre. It’s a testament to our society: I

think we’re ready to put anything on a T-shirt. It’s such a literal and direct form of communication; I love

it.” The fit is also important. “With this dress, I really wanted to capture the comfort and ease of a broken-in

T-shirt, but in a dress,” he says.

Perfect for any occasion

Unsurprisingly, they’re a bestseller. British Vogue’s business manager, Naomi Smart, has been wearing Conner

Ives t-shirt dresses for several years. “It’s safe to say my Conner Ives dress is the most worn dress in my wardrobe,”

she says. Instead of wearing traditional maternity clothes, she wore the stretchy versions of this very design,

made from recycled spandex cycling jerseys, throughout her pregnancy. “Conner Ives dresses have no seasons, they

are timeless and have accompanied me to work events, trips to France and Ibiza, throughout my pregnancy (the

stretch is unmatched!), and then again once I was past my due date.”

“Regenerated items, a bit of wit and humor, all in a simple silhouette that is also unique.” – Conner Ives

Vogue’s extended team has followed suit. Laura Ingham, deputy director of Vogue’s global fashion network, and

Jess Gerardi, shopping editor, embraced the recent drop and wore them to the office more than once. “It’s the

perfect style for summer, day or night,” says the latter. “I fell in love with the sleeveless model, which I

wear with shorts or pants.”

Conner Ives: a piece of mystery

Conner Ives attributes the success of T-shirt dresses to the ingenious simplicity of their design. “I think they

represent what I stand for,” he says. “Regenerated items, a bit of wit and humor, all in a simple silhouette

that is also unique.” The best part about it all? You never know which one you’ll get.
