“Sometimes I feel a little silly being an actress.” Zendaya on the cover of
Zendaya is 25 years old and is for the first time on the cover of Vogue Italia. Interview.
The air was heavy with suspense and incessant whispering, waiting for Zendaya to arrive. Somewhere in a small suburb
near Rome, on a cool winter morning, a massive production gathered for the young actress’ first cover for Vogue
Italia. Her arrival promised to transform the energy of the day. As she walked through the set accompanied by her
team, it became clear that this was not a star showing up to be blindly modeled and shaped by the designers on
set, but rather a true collaboration with a woman who had a vision of her own. Some of us were lucky enough to
witness this famous vision, while watching the metamorphosis of an off-duty actress dressed in a jogging suit become
the very representation of beauty and grace for an entire generation.
Zendaya, between talent and confidence
“Don’t worry, she’ll figure it out,” her stylist and longtime collaborator, Law Roach, proudly said in response
to the photographer’s request for Zendaya to find a pose that works for the shoot. The confidence and swagger with
which she moves makes it impossible not to be a fan, not to mention her acting, producing or styling skills, but
simply her presence is a force that speaks for itself. In recent years, the number of people who have noticed and
defended this presence and her multiple talents has grown by millions, thanks to the successful HBO series Euphoria,
in which she is the main character.

“Recently, I have noticed a change in my reactions when I meet people or in the way people interact with
me on a daily basis. For a long time, I was able to maintain a bit of anonymity, which allowed me to live
a relatively normal life. Of course, this comes with new challenges and pressures, but I’ve been doing this
for a long time, and I started when I was very young. Fortunately, I’ve had time to adapt and develop my
experience in a way that didn’t happen overnight. I have to constantly adapt and I try to always be grateful
for all of that, I find that my fans totally resonate with my work, and that means a lot to me,” she explained
in our conversation.
Growing with her fans
But Zendaya and her fans have managed to find a balance that seems healthier than the average fan devoted
to their favorite celebrities. “A lot of them have grown up with me and seen me evolve in different parts
of my life and career, and with that, a lot of us around the same age, have similar perspectives on life,
mindsets that mesh or even just hopes and wishes for the future, whether it’s for my career or for the world
today and tomorrow. They really understand that I am a human being, even the most intense fans, and they
want me to be happy and I feel that sincerely. They are really respectful of my privacy, the things I want
to keep to myself and the boundaries I choose to set.
“Without the women of the past, especially the iconic black women who have done what I’m doing before me,
I wouldn’t be able to live the life I’m living today” – Zendaya
At 25, the actress, in many different ways, has become the face of a new generation whose impact on pop
culture resembles that of past icons who came before her, including Josephine Baker, Sade, and Eartha Kitt.
I sometimes wonder if making history and being a part of it is something she questions. She answers, “It’s
strange. It’s something you try to consider and be aware of but, at the same time; you have to try not to
think about it too much so you don’t get too caught up in it. It’s kind of scary, the pressure that goes
with it makes you want to constantly do things right because you want to make people proud of you. However,
I feel incredibly grateful to be in this position because without the women of the past, especially the
iconic black women who did what I do before me, I wouldn’t be able to live the life I do today. With every
new accomplishment, every new knowledge I gain, I hope I can help move things forward and that it will be
easier for the next person who takes my place.”
Zendaya, fashion icon
Influence isn’t the only thing that feels familiar then, but so does aura. As she walks in front of the
camera in a Valentino mini dress, I get that same feeling I had in front of old Josephine Baker photos,
I’m amazed. It’s almost as if I’m watching a performance, and with each new outfit change, I see her giving
her all to the fashion look. View more In a pink Valentino suit, Zendaya is our weekend fashion inspiration

“People find a form of connection with these characters that I’m so proud to play, they feel close to me and
have healed and grown and learned to live with their pasts, and that’s priceless; cutt . All of that gives me a purpose.”
