The fashion trend for red carpets in 2022? Upcycling!

Celebrities didn’t hesitate to play the upcycling card on the Met Gala red carpet this year, either with a

dress already worn at another event, like Emma Stone, or with an outfit made from vintage fabrics. A trend

that seems to be taking hold in the fashion world.

What if the new fashion trend was upcycling? Never unveiled in public before, the satin dress signed Louis

Vuitton worn by Emma Stone on the red carpet of the Met Gala 2022 had already dressed the actress. And not

just on any occasion, since this is the dress created for the afterparty of her wedding to Dave McCary in September

Louis Vuitton, which wants to make a shift to circular fashion, hit the upcycling game hard at the biggest fashion

event of the year. The 13 other celebrities dressed in Louis Vuitton were offered an outfit crafted from pieces

from old collections, some of them more than 8 years old! “There’s no better feeling than knowing that your

creations will live on,” reveals Nicolas Ghesquière, yesterday’s leader of a strong, ambitious and revolutionary

message under the fashion spotlight. “While my role as artistic director is to create the new, I was very happy

to be able to explore my previous collections and designs again for the Met Gala this year. It has never been

more important to show that designs should be made to last.”

South Korean Squid Games star Jung Ho-yeon’s suede mini dress with cutouts and leather inserts is from the 2022

Cruise Collection, which will be presented in May 2022 in Rio de Janeiro. All accessorized with a pair of boots

from the fall-winter 2022-2023 runway, seen on the show of the last Fashion Week. As for Gemma Chan’s and Cynthia

Erivo’s dresses, they both came from the Spring-Summer 2022 wardrobe, but the former’s cape was found in the

Cruise 2020 collection while the latter had a headpiece designed with archival fabrics from the house. Nike Air Force Pewter Jung Ho-yeon in a dress from Louis Vuitton’s 2022 Cruise collection.

Emma Chamberlain wore a beige crop top from the Fall/Winter 2022-2022 collection. Pregnant Sophie Turner also made

a statement in a dress from the 2022 Cruise collection! And it is squarely in the archives of the fall-winter 2022-2022,

that Nicolas Ghesquière, was picked the pumps and leather pants worn by the Norwegian actress Renate Reinsve. Same

material, another resurrected stock: Eileen Gun wore a leather dress from the spring-summer 2022 collection.

The house of Gucci, which imagined Billie Eilish’s dress, did not hesitate to make new with old either. Imagined

totally bespoke from the house’s recycled materials, the satin and lace outfit was “as eco-friendly as possible,”

as the singer told Vogue. The ethics extended to her shoes, made of vegan leather.

Behind Shawn Mendes’ princely looks was also an “upcycled” ensemble by Tommy Hilfiger, as the star with 26 million

followers declared on Twitter.

This is not the first time that designers will draw on pieces from their old collections to imagine red carpet

dresses, or at Oxfam, as Harris Reed, author of Emma Watson’s 2021 outfit, a wedding dress chinée … Or that

celebrities dare to carry the same outfits repeatedly.

This encouraging momentum observed this time on the most scrutinized red carpet of the year proves that the circular

movement is gaining momentum in the fashion world, even at the most glamorous events. As a thumbing of the nose

at the overproduction that harms the planet, the most luxurious houses and celebrities now make it acceptable

to revalue the pieces of his wardrobe or dormant stocks. We applaud.
