Tom Ford Steps Down as CFDA President

After three years at the helm of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Tom Ford is stepping down.

After three years at the helm of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Tom Ford is stepping down.

“On May 31, 2022, my three-year term as president of the CFDA will come to an end. When I started at headquarters

in June 2022, my goal was to help American fashion be recognized and appreciated for what it is. The world

needed to recognize its importance and the talent of its members. I could never have imagined the circumstances

the fashion industry and the world would go through, as the global pandemic literally stopped time and put

the world, and our lives, on pause,” said Tom Ford in a statement released by the CFDA.

After the departure of former CFDA president Diane Von F├╝rstenberg, Tom Ford took over as chairman of the

board. Unfortunately for him, the timing couldn’t have been worse, in that he arrived at the position only

a short time before the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Then in the midst of his tenure, with the help of

the CFDA, he launched A Common Thread in collaboration with Vogue, donating $5 million to the U.S. fashion

industry. He also helped restore New York Fashion Week and the 2021 Met Gala to their pre-covid splendor,

bringing a large portion of the American fashion community into agreement.

“I am honored to have been able to support the incredible and undeniable talent that forges American fashion

over the past three years” – Tom Ford

“The pandemic has challenged us all. We had to rethink our businesses, from how our designs were created

to how they were produced but also how we interacted with our customers.” he continued in his statement.

“We were forced to find new ways to run our businesses. Some people probably think that fashion is all about

creating beautiful clothes and accessories, or that it’s all about catwalks, dressing celebrities and going

to parties without taking a second to consider the amount of work that goes into it all. They forget that

the fashion industry is worth over three trillion dollars and employs millions of people. As president of

the CFDA, I have had the opportunity to see firsthand the remarkable determination and optimism of those

who keep this industry going. I am honored to have been able to support the incredible and undeniable talent

that forges American fashion over the past three years, and I look forward to seeing what it all becomes

as I continue my role on the Council.” View more Video: Tom Ford looks back on career highlights
