Hailey Bieber on the cover of Vogue France in May 2022
Ode to sweetness.
What can we say about Hailey Bieber, whom the whole world probably knows? It’s dizzying to capture the intimacy
of a personality surrounded by 42 million followers… We asked the most benevolent of our French writers to
tell us her perception of Hailey. Hailey Bieber by Sophie Fontanel, or how the author of the recent Capitale
de la douceur (ed. Seghers) seems to talk to the star by candlelight, to a young girl just charming. Hailey
the comet, evanescent and close.
Softness… Extreme need in this strange world. In this fragile spring, when the Cannes Film Festival is about
to begin, we wanted to highlight a new guard of actresses and directors. And to see that there is still a strong
commitment in their choice of films. That the softness of their look serves a real determination. For example,
we can only admire the pugnacity of Luàna Bajrami who, at 21 years old, directed her first film The Hill Where
the Lions Roar, returning to her native country, Kosovo, whose tragic past we know, and who expresses the crazy
desire for the future and optimism of her generation…
The sweetness also, tinged with melancholy, to return to our history. The photo you see on the editorial page
of the magazine dates back to 1989, under the aegis of Irene Silvagni, then fashion editor of Vogue, who left
us recently, along with Patrick Demarchelier. Vogue by Irene, these were some of the most beautiful images
of softness in the magazine, often shot by Peter Lindbergh and Paolo Roversi, her two favorite photographers.
Colombe Pringle, Vogue editor-in-chief from 1987 to 1996, pays tribute to her and tells this story that everyone
working in the press has experienced. How Irene goes to great lengths to get extra pages to fully dedicate
a fashion series she believes in. It hasn’t changed that much… Rising up just to show an image of softness,
it’s nothing but everything when it comes to making a beautiful magazine, especially when it’s called Vogue.
