The history of Audrey Hepburn’s black dress in

The result of yet another collaboration between Hubert de Givenchy and Audrey Hepburn, the black satin dress

worn by the actress in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is still considered one of the most iconic outfits in cinema.

Remember: New York at dawn, 5th Avenue is silent, a cab stops in front of the Tiffany’s store and Audrey Hepburn

gets out, wearing a spectacularly simple black sheath dress to enjoy her breakfast in front of the jewelry windows.

This legendary outfit was designed by Hubert de Givenchy, who made a custom-made satin dress for the actress.

Richly dressed, Holly Golightly – her character – also sports a Tiffany necklace with multiple rows of pearls

and a brooch in her hair that testify to the probable social night she just spent. Released in 1961, the film

by Blake Edwards is now a reference in terms of cinema but also and especially, fashion.

The little black dress of Audrey Hepburn

The concept of little black dress was born in the 20s under the impetus of Coco Chanel. For Diamonds on a

Couch and his lifelong muse, Hubert de Givenchy took up the idea of a timeless piece of indisputable elegance

by imagining a sheath dress with minimalist cuts in the back. Riccardo Tisci, Givenchy’s creative director

from 2022 to 2022, describes the dress as a perfect example of the 1960s: austere in the front, delicate,

sensual and Parisian in the back. While Holly Golightly’s eccentric outfit may not be the kind you put on

in the morning when inspiration fails, this iconic dress has cemented the little black dress in everyone’s

mind as a timeless basic. For the needs of the film, Hubert de Givenchy created another dress that we see

a little later: still black and sleeveless, it is made of blistered silk and worn by Audrey Hepburn with a

wide-brimmed hat and her traditional pair of black gloves.

  • Revealing Holly Golightly

When Truman Capote wrote Breakfast at Tiffany’s, he was far from imagining Audrey Hepburn in the role of Holly. In

the mind of the author, it is Marilyn Monroe, blonder and less smooth than the first, who embodies the call girl. It

is however her that Blake Edwards will choose when Marilyn Monroe refuses the contract. After playing a princess in

Roman Holiday, or a chauffeur’s daughter in Sabrina, the actress welcomes with open arms the opportunity to express

herself in a more eccentric role. In her own words, it was nice to get away from that very proper princess or nun look.

To give Holly that touch of madness, Audrey Hepburn let herself dye a few strands of hair blonde. The character of

Capote organizes crazy parties in the heart of his New York apartment and does not hesitate to bring out the big game

every time. If the black Givenchy dress sets the tone of her glamorous personality to the extreme from the beginning,

it appears several times in the film, accessorized differently, proving that the essence of the little black dress

is to change face according to the mood. Three copies of the iconic black dress from Diamonds on the Couch circulate

in the world: one is preciously preserved in the house of Givenchy, another is exhibited in the Museum of Costume in

Madrid and the last one was sold at auction by Christie’s for more than 607,000 euros in 2022. This is the highest

amount ever for a film costume and the proceeds were donated by Givenchy to the City of Joy Foundation’s children’s

aid fund in Calcutta.
